Chat with PDF

Ask questions about a PDF and get answers that say which page they come from.

Checking that the servers are available…

Pro. The file stays on your device; only its text goes through our server to Anthropic’s Claude.

Quick facts

Takes
One PDF of up to 500 pages, and questions of up to 1,000 characters. Scanned pages are read with OCR in your browser first.
Gives
Answers on the page, each fact with the page it comes from, in the language you ask in.
Runs
Your browser finds the passages that best match each question, up to 10,000 tokens, and sends only those, with the question and the last 3 exchanges, to Claude Haiku 5.5.
Costs
2 credits a question.
Plan
Pro, with 1,000 AI credits a month; an AI pack adds 2,000 more. The cost shows before anything is sent, and a request that fails gives its credits back.
Privacy
The file stays on your device; only its text goes to our server and on to Anthropic, which does not train on it and deletes it within 30 days. Before it goes, email addresses, phone, card, Aadhaar, PAN, IBAN, Social Security and PPS numbers, and any names you add, are replaced on your device by markers such as ⟦PHONE 1⟧, and the answer gets them back on your device; this is on unless you turn it off. We keep how much was used and what it cost, never the text, the questions or the answers.

Answers from the document, and only from it

The document is cut into passages of a few paragraphs. For each question, your browser ranks them by the words they share with it, rarer words counting for more (BM25, the ranking search engines grew up on), and sends the best, each with the passage after it. A document shorter than the 10,000 tokens a question may carry goes whole. A question that shares no words with the document, such as one asked in another language, gets passages from across it instead.

The model is told to answer only from the passages, to say when they do not hold the answer rather than answer from what it knows, and to decline questions that are not about the document. Numbers in square brackets are the pages to check. A PDF can carry text written to steer an AI. The document goes to the model as data inside marked boundaries, after instructions that say to treat it as data; the model has no tools, no web access and nothing to run, and its answer is shown as plain text, never as a page or a link of its own making. The worst such text can do is change an answer you read.

Measured on our sample file

The service as it runs on uvpdftool.com, on 2026-10-26: three questions about the sample rental agreement (2 pages), answered by Claude Haiku 5.5, the way a visitor asks them.
QuestionTimeWordsPages cited
When is the rent due, and how much is it?2.9 s281
Who pays for repairs?3.4 s441
How much notice is needed to end the agreement?1.9 s462

Each answer came back in a few seconds and pointed at the page it was read from. The time is the model’s; finding the passages happens in your browser before anything is sent.

What it cannot do

  • Answer from outside the document. It says so when the PDF does not seem to answer the question.
  • See text that is part of a picture or a chart, or read a PDF of more than 500 pages.
  • Keep the conversation. Leaving the page ends it; copy an answer to keep it.

If something goes wrong

There is no text to work with on these pages.
The pages have no text, even with OCR: the scan may be too faint. Recognize the text with OCR PDF in the right language, then ask again. Open OCR PDF
The answer says the document does not seem to say
Ask with the words the document uses, or name the part you mean, such as a clause or a heading.
The AI service is busy. Nothing was charged; try again in a minute.
Wait a minute and ask again. A question that fails gives its credits back.

About Chat with PDF

Chat with PDF answers your questions about a PDF from the document itself, each fact with its page. Your browser reads the PDF and picks the passages that match each question; only those go through our server to Claude, Anthropic’s model.

How to use Chat with PDF

  1. Add the PDF and wait for it to be read.

  2. Type a question, in any language.

  3. Read the answer and check the pages it names.

Frequently asked questions

Does it answer from the internet?
No. It answers only from the PDF, and says so when the PDF does not seem to say.
What does a question cost?
Two AI credits. Pro comes with 1,000 credits a month.
Can I ask follow-up questions?
Yes. Your last three questions and answers go with each new question, so it knows what you mean.
Is the whole PDF sent?
Only a short one. For a longer PDF, your browser sends the passages that best match the question, about five pages of text at most.
Is the conversation kept?
No. The questions and answers stay on this page; we keep only the number of credits used. Anthropic does not train on the text and deletes it within 30 days unless its safety systems flag a request.
