Translate PDF

Translate a PDF into another language and keep its layout: each paragraph stays where it was.

Checking that the servers are available…

Pro. The file stays on your device; only its text goes through our server to Anthropic’s Claude.

Quick facts

Takes
One PDF with text in it, up to 500 of its pages at a time. A scan needs its text recognized first, with OCR PDF.
Gives
A PDF in the language you choose, each paragraph in its place, in its own font, size and color; pictures, drawings, links and the rest of the page as they were.
Runs
Each page’s paragraphs are translated by Claude Haiku 5.5 and set back by the same engine as Edit PDF, in your browser.
Costs
5 credits a page of up to 2,000 tokens of text, about a page of ordinary print; a denser page counts as two or more. The estimate shows before you start, and each page is charged as it is done.
Plan
Pro, with 1,000 AI credits a month; an AI pack adds 2,000 more. The cost shows before anything is sent, and a request that fails gives its credits back.
Languages
Into any of 17: English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Spanish, Portuguese, Indonesian, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, French, German, Italian, Dutch, from any language the model reads.
Privacy
The file stays on your device; only its text goes to our server and on to Anthropic, which does not train on it and deletes it within 30 days. Before it goes, email addresses, phone, card, Aadhaar, PAN, IBAN, Social Security and PPS numbers, and any names you add, are replaced on your device by markers such as ⟦PHONE 1⟧, and the answer gets them back on your device; this is on unless you turn it off. We keep how much was used and what it cost, never the text, the questions or the answers.

The translation where the original was

The editor’s analysis finds each paragraph of a page, with its box, font, size and color. The paragraphs go to the model a page at a time, in reading order, so each is translated with the ones around it; numbers, codes, addresses and names stay as they are. Each translation replaces its paragraph in the same box, a heading keeping its style and a list item its marker, in the document’s own font where that font has the letters, and otherwise in a matching font that comes with the site, with Noto fonts for every script of the 17 languages.

A translation usually needs more room than its original: German and Tamil run longer than English. A paragraph that would run past its space is set smaller, step by step down to 70% of its size; one that still does not fit runs on below, and the result says how the page was done. Text that is part of a picture is not translated, and paragraphs the editor cannot redraw, such as rotated text, are left as they were; the result counts them. A PDF can carry text written to steer an AI. The document goes to the model as data inside marked boundaries, after instructions that say to treat it as data; the model has no tools, no web access and nothing to run, and its answer is shown as plain text, never as a page or a link of its own making. The worst such text can do is change an answer you read.

To change a word of the translation afterwards, open the result in Edit PDF.

Read it as what a page costs: about five credits and eight seconds here, a page at a time. The PDF grows because it now carries a font for the new script beside the original ones.

What it cannot do

  • Translate text that is part of a picture, or a scan without recognized text. Run OCR PDF first.
  • Keep every translation the size of its original. A longer one is set smaller, down to 70%.
  • Translate rotated or vertical text. Such paragraphs stay as they were, and the result counts them.

About Translate PDF

Translate PDF translates each paragraph of a PDF with Claude, Anthropic’s model, through our server, and puts the translation back where the original was, in its own font, size and color, so the copy keeps the layout. The PDF itself stays on your device.
